Dear Dr. Clicknpray:
What do I need to know to start backing up my home system? I've never done it (I know, I've been a bad girl...) and I don't know how to begin.
Signed,
Risky Business

Dear Risky Business,
Bad bad bad bad badbabdbad. Are you also the person who carefully
places her cup of coffee on the arm of the sofa, on a white rug,
thinking "I know this is a bad idea..."
Please do two things. Point your browser to
www.@backup" and get their 30 day free trial. Second, start figuring
out where your important data files are. You should know where you
put letters, spreadsheets, databases. Don't forget your address book,
favorites, Quicken data, etc. When you have @backup loaded you have
to tell it what you have discovered. If you don't know, or are
unsure, ask or pay someone to help you. (The Doctor also makes
housecalls...) This is important!
It is not strictly important to backup your whole computer, though
there are good reasons to do so. So,when you have finished the above
(tonight!) you can also purchase and install a good tape backup
system.

Dear Dr. Clicknpray:
All my geek friends seem to know how to fix my computer by using programs with funny-sounding names like msinfo, regedit, sysinfo and stuff like that. What the heck are these tools, how can I learn more, and do they do windows?

Dear jstwndring.exe,
My advice is don't play with
those tools, or you will surely be sorry. The other thing I think is
that tools are used to fix something. If it isn't broken don't fix
it. And the other thing I think is that computers are more difficult
to fix than cars, thought they aren't as greasy. What do you want to
do with your life? Fix computers? I don't think so... Stay lean. Stay
mean. Don't fool with the machine...

Dear Dr. Clicknpray:
What kind of preventative maintenance routine should I be running on my home computer? Do I need any special programs for this?
Signed,
Aintenance

|
Dear Aintenance,
Sounds like you know enough to call a non-routine a routine, so what's
the matter gal? Get the latest Norton System Works Professional. It
is chock-a-block full of goodies, including Ghost, which will let you
make a disk image of your whole drive. It includes an anti-virus, a
defragmenter, and milk and cookies as well. (You are falling into a
deep sleep... You will pick up the phone now, and begin dialing...800
800 0014,1,3142. Ask for Jennifer and tell her you are a friend of
mine. Give her your credit card and have it shipped today....)
