Dear Dr. Clicknpray:
What is that irritating Paper Clip man in MS Word and how do I get rid of it?
Signed,
Exasperated
Dear Exasperated,
Short of reformatting your hard drive and installing Linux and Corel WordPerfect for Linux, I believe you mean? Go to the PC Man one last time - click on Help, Microsoft Word Help (or press F1). Then click on Options. Select the Options tab and deselect EVERYTHING that is checked - so that all the little check boxes are blank., and click on OK. Please send an e-mail to Poobah Gates at Microsoft.com and tell him what you think.

The Doc

Dear Dr. Clicknpray:
What should I do if I think I have carpal tunnel syndrome?
Signed,
Aching in Wristletts
Dear Aching in Wristletts,
It is real. You could get it from drumming your fingers (obnoxiously) on the table for eight hours a day. What to do? Figure out every way you can not to use the mouse. Every time you see a menu letter underlined, you can generate a mouse click by holding the Alt key and tapping the underlined letter. You can do a whole lot of things without the mouse.

Type in bursts. Then stop. Adjust your hairpiece. Swivel your chair. Have some water. Stand up, sit down, fight fight fight. Type some more. Stop. Link your fingers and reverse arch them. Do stuff with your hands other than the micro motor stuff of mousing and typing.

Joking aside, see your medical doctor before it gets serious. Although therapies are available, there is no cure like prevention. Lack of treatment can lead to long-term damage.

The Doc

Dear Dr. Clicknpray:
What is the first rule of safe computing?
Signed,
Just Curious
Dear Curious,

The first rule is good juice. Clean power. Electricity. No kidding. Nothing can make you more mysteriously unhappy than bad juice. Unless you are in a class A building (expensive) invest in a $100 battery backup for every computer. Not only do battery backups do a better job of protecting against surges than your $15 hardware store power strip, they also protect against "sags." And since sags and surges are a danger in real life as well, you can see why you need to pay attention with regard to your computer. Buy one now.

I would also turn off your computer when you are going away for a couple of hours. Nothing is nastier than three or four off/on surges in a row which contemptuously re-boots your computer like a well known mid western governor in his previous life. You don't want this to happen.

Yours Clickingly,
The Doc
